Der Fachbereich Translations-, Sprach- und Kulturwissenschaft (Fachbereich 06) der Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz

1947 durch Verfügung des Oberkommandos der französischen Besatzungszone als „Staatliche Dolmetscherhochschule Germersheim“ gegründet, wurde die Einrichtung 1949 als „Auslands- und Dolmetscherinstitut“ (ADI) in die drei Jahre zuvor wiedereröffnete Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz eingegliedert. Der daraus entstandene heutige Fachbereich Translations-, Sprach- und Kulturwissenschaft (FTSK) ist der einzige Fachbereich der Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz, der sich außerhalb von Mainz (d.h. 110 Kilometer südlich davon, im südpfälzischen Germersheim) befindet und somit geografisch zur Region Rhein-Neckar gehört.

Am FTSK sind etwa 1.500 Studierende eingeschrieben, von denen etwa ein Drittel aus etwa 70 unterschiedlichen Ländern stammt. Ca. 240 Personen sind am FTSK beschäftigt, davon 16 Professorinnen und Professoren sowie 45 im Bereich der Verwaltung Tätige. Der FTSK ist eine der weltweit größten Ausbildungsstätten für Dolmetschen und Übersetzen. Er kooperiert mit etwa 100 Partneruniversitäten auf allen Kontinenten. Auf dem Gebiet der Translationswissenschaft ist er eines der weltweit führenden Zentren in der universitären Forschung und Lehre. Am FTSK werden derzeit folgende Studiengänge mit vielfältigen Sprachkombinationen angeboten:

The Faculty of Translation, Linguistics and Cultural Studies (Faculty 06) of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz

Founded as the ‘Staatliche Dolmetscherhochschule Germersheim’ by decree of the Supreme Commander of the French occupation zone in 1947, the institution was integrated into the recently reopened Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and renamed ‘Auslands- und Dolmetscherinstitut’ in 1949. The department, which is now called ‘Faculty of Translation, Linguistics and Cultural Studies’ (FTSK), is the only department of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz that is not in Mainz itself (it is actually located in Germersheim in the southern Palatinate, about 110 km south of Mainz) and therefore geographically belongs to the Rhine-Neckar region.

Approximately 1500 students are enrolled at the FTSK, a third of whom come from around 70 different countries. The department further employs about 240 people with 16 professors and 45 people working in administration. The FTSK is one of the world’s largest educational institutions for interpreters and translators. There are cooperation agreements in place with around 100 partner universities on all continents. It is one of the leading centres for translation-related academic research and teaching. The following degree programmes with numerous language combinations can currently be studied at the FTSK:
